A characteristic Alfama street

Lisbon neighbourhoods

Alfama rewards curiosity more than speed.

The cathedral, castle, viewpoints and Fado landmarks matter, but the neighbourhood makes sense through its lanes, slopes and everyday details between them.

Historic Lisbon on the hills

Sé Cathedral, Castelo de São Jorge, Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia connect the district’s history with its best-known views.

Allow for the slopes

Distances look short, but stairs, cobbles and stops at viewpoints slow the route. Begin higher up when mobility or time is limited.

Stay into the evening

Fado, neighbourhood restaurants and the changing light make Alfama particularly rewarding from late afternoon onwards.
